READY FOR THE POWDER

Weatherproof, lightweight freeriding jacket with merino inserts for the backcountry

Highlights

  • Lightweight and supple
  • Loose cut for great freedom of movement
  • Merino wool in areas sensitive to the cold

Lightweight and supple for full freedom of movement when freeriding: The 3L DEEP SHELL JACKET for men offers full protection and high comfort combined with low weight.

The wind- and waterproof DERMIZAX®NX high-performance membrane from Toray is lined with merino wool in areas of the body that are particularly sensitive to the cold, guaranteeing optimum heat retention and a comfortable fit. In stormy conditions, the two-way adjustable storm hood and adjustable waistband and cuffs provide additional protection. But when the going gets tough, the ergonomic underarm ventilation zippers provide additional ventilation.

Small objects that you need to access quickly can easily be stored in the spacious front pockets, inner pocket or ski pass pocket. One particularly practical feature is the integrated cell phone pocket in the front left pocket, where merino mesh protects your battery against the cold.

Thanks to its robust membrane and flat seams, the 3L DEEP SHELL JACKET for men is particularly durable and long-wearing. It is also PFC-free and climate-neutral in the interest of sustainability. Green light for mindful freeriders!

High alpine touring
I use this jacket for a combination of alpine touring and ice climbing, in both the Northeast and the French Alps. Though designed primarily for skiing, as an Ortovox Athlete, I wanted to test it out in climbing applications. I've found it exceedingly functional in both contexts. Ice climbing and ski touring actually have a lot in common: Intense stretches of activity, followed by lower aerobic stretches. The pit zips help in skirting between these extremes. I find the jacket to have the features I want, without the added weight of unnecessary features I don't want. It's got two spacious chest pockets, providing for easy access even with a harness on. One of the chest pockets has an interior stretch pocket that's useful for storing keys, a Garmin Mini InReach, or other things that you don't want to lose when fishing for your phone or snacks. Depending on how you access the backcountry (lift versus skinning), you might find the zipper pocket on the left arm to be an unnecessary addition. And the waterproofing has proved itself time and time again while standing under dripping icicles while climbing and while being pummeled with sleet on Northeast backcountry days. Since I'm an Ortovox Athlete, you've got a right to be a bit circumspect about my review, but I can tell you that this is a piece that I truly believe in and a product that I use daily, with confidence and with enjoyment, in the field. I ordered the Ortovox 3L Deep Shell jacket together with the 4L Deep Shell Bip pants to replace my long-serving combination of Salomon Bip pants and Norrona Lofoten jacket. Unfortunately, I am a little disappointed with the jacket. At first glance and when I tried it on for the first time, everything fits perfectly. Except for the noticeably missing snow guards on the wrists, as I like to wear short gloves without cuffs. However, I initially thought that this jacket would probably be fine without them, otherwise Ortovox would install something like that. After a few tours in the field and 15 days of skiing in the ski area so far, I have to say that the sleeve length is a little too short, especially in combination with the missing snow guards. In very cold conditions with a lot of wind, this is very noticeable, as the closure above the glove is not good enough. If you then intentionally or unintentionally reach into the deep snow, you immediately have snow around your wrists. That's annoying and doesn't really suit a jacket that's actually intended for this environment. That's the only thing I have to complain about, though. Everything else is great and very well thought out. I think it's all the more of a shame that a feature like the sleeve snow guards is missing from this jacket. The 4L Deep Shell Bip pants fit perfectly and are also very well thought out. If I could make two wishes, however, they would be the elastic bands on the snow guards, which are a bit too wide. In my opinion, these sit a bit too loosely around the ski boots and could perhaps ride up. But that hasn't happened to me yet! Another ventilation option on the inside of the legs would be great. My old pants had this, giving me full flexibility to create ideal ventilation, whether in spring temperatures where everything is open, or in adverse conditions with snowfall where only the inside can be opened a little. I ordered both items in XL, I'm 193 cm tall and weigh 92 kg.
