2-DAY TOUR IN THE TOTES GEBIRGE

SKI LOCAL WITH MARLIES AND ANDI

When the lease on their apartment was unexpectedly terminated in 2019, Marlies and Andi from Hochzwei.media were able to realize a long-held dream and move into a camper. In their home on wheels, the two ORTOVOX athletes are SKI LOCALS wherever they end up. But the pair still associate the Totes Gebirge in the southern part of Upper Austria with the idea of “home”. The vast Alpine world around Windischgarsten offers so many possibilities for ski touring that they are happy to spend many weeks of the winter in their former local mountains – without having to give up on variety.

VIA THE LIEZENER HÜTTE TO THE MÖLBING SUMMIT

Marlies and Andi set out from Wörschach in Upper Styria on one of their favorite tours. Ahead of the two athletes lies a two-day ski tour crossing the Hochmölbling with its beautiful ridge, which although presenting no major difficulty, still looks imposingly alpine – and offers sensational views.

But first the route takes them below Hochtausing and Reidling, then up through the Hochtor pass to the Liezener Hütte, a cozy self-catering cabin that promises evenings of lively companionship. The next morning, Marlies and Andi set off for the Querlstein, from where they start “bagging” the Mölbings: From the Mittermölbing along the ridge to the Hochmölbing, then back again for a sensational descent via the Kleinmöbing. An alternative route down in good conditions is to take the very long and spectacular south-facing descent from the Mittermölbing.

OVERNIGHTS AWAY FROM HOME

The Totes Gebirge offers almost limitless possibilities for traverses and excursions. Even as a local you can leave home for a couple of days to spend a magical night up in the mountains. Broadly speaking, the Totes Gebirge in the heart of Austria covers almost twice the area of the Mont Blanc massif – 1,130 square kilometers – and yet it is relatively unknown and untouched by mass tourism.
