A base layer is a form of functional underwear – so the base layer is the first in the layering system.
The great functionality of merino wool comes into its own in the versatile ORTOVOX base layers: optimum moisture management meets excellent comfort. Depending on their intended use, the ORTOVOX base layers are made from either 100% merino wool or a smart fiber mix with polyamide or lyocell (TENCEL™).

The number refers to the weight, i.e. the weight of the material. The higher the number, the heavier and thus the warmer the base layer.
Merino wool is...
- 100% ECOLOGICAL: Wool is a sustainable raw material, biodegradable and functional even without added chemicals.
- MOISTURE REGULATING: Merino fibers are highly breathable and do not get wet even during sweat-inducing tours.
- ODOR NEUTRALIZING: Merino wool makes multi-day tours possible with only a few pieces of clothing and without unpleasant odors.
- EASY TO CARE FOR: Our merino wool products can be washed in the machine at 30° or 40°.
- SOFT: Merino wool is comfortable to wear, soft on the skin and provides your with pure comfort during all activities.
- TEMPERATURE REGULATING: Wool fibers are true all-rounders whatever the season – they cool you down in summer, and warm you in winter.
The tops in particular can also be worn as a single layer according to your preferences regarding temperature and fit.
As the base layer provides the foundation of the clothing system, nothing except underwear should be worn underneath it.
