Get involved in our fight to save the Tarkine rainforest, a giant carbon store

It’s one of the largest, oldest, and most biodiverse landscapes in the world: The Tarkine is located in the north-west of Tasmania, the home of our merino sheep farmers. It was our sheep farmers who alerted us to the large-scale destruction of this unique ecosystem caused by the mining and timber industry. We have decided to join the fight to preserve the Tarkine.

The protection of humans and animals, climate neutrality by 2024, and the protection of regional uniqueness are the central pillars of our protACT sustainability strategy. The threat to the environment can never be considered solely locally, and so we are fighting to save the Tarkine, one of the largest carbon stores in the world. Now more than ever we are aware of how the destruction of an ecosystem can impact our everyday lives – including in the form of a pandemic outbreak. The future of the Tarkine affects us all.

Understanding the big picture

Devastating destruction, devastating consequences

The brutal deforestation of the Tarkine by the mining and timber industry also has globally devastating effects. If this unique ecosystem –over 60 million years old and home to countless species that are threatened with extinction – is destabilized, it could have enormous consequences for humanity.

By now, every one of us has become aware of how closely species extinction and climate change are linked with the spread of dangerous viruses.

Thinking holistically

Saving the rainforest means protecting the environment

Preserving such an important rainforest is one of the most effective ways to slow global warming. Temperate rainforests – such as the Tarkine – are our greatest stores of CO2 and sources of O2, and therefore our most precious asset.

They are essential in the fight to save our environment, and our future. The Tarkine alone stores the same amount of CO2 as Germany emits in two years.

Tasmania – the home of our wool

Since 1995 our focus at ORTOVOX has been on merino wool. Hardly any of our items of clothing are made without these fine, high-quality natural fibers from Tasmania. We have been working with our seven sheep farmers for many years now, and in that time we have developed a deep friendship.

We share important fundamental values and consider it our shared responsibility to protect people, animals, and nature.

DRIVEN BY AN INNER VOICE

“Our environmental bank” is what our sheep farmers Julian and Annabel call the Tarkine, due to its enormous natural capacity to store CO2. The sheep-farming couple allow their values and their actions to be guided by their inner voices. Just like the Bob Brown Foundation and climbing icon John Middendorf, they have devoted themselves to opposing the destruction of this unique landscape in Tasmania.

  • BOB BROWN

    Tasmanian Bob Brown is one of Australia’s most important environmental activists. For years now, the Bob Brown Foundation has been fighting to preserve one of the most valuable landscapes on our planet – the Tarkine. In addition to its political activities, the non-profit foundation organizes and finances local projects and protests. We support this foundation through donations.

  • JOHN MIDDENDORF

    Inventor and climbing legend John Middendorf emigrated from the USA to Tasmania and has made the Tarkine his own personal project. As a teacher and a father, he wants to preserve this wild, ancient place for future generations. Activists use John’s portaledges to occupy trees to prevent them being felled.

  • ANNABEL UND JULIAN VON BIBRA

    Julian and Annabel are among the most committed sheep farmers in Tasmania. Their dedication to animal and human welfare and their appreciation of their employees is exemplary – and successful. This is what they have to say about the Tarkine: “It’s a stunning wilderness in Tasmania, largely untouched by humans and a huge carbon store. It could continue to be our “environmental bank” for many centuries to come.”
